Piha Campground.

The village's iconic campground, set back from the beach at The Domain. Powered and non-powered sites, cabins, shared facilities. Run by the legendary Fiona.

Camping centrally located in the village.

About

Piha Beach Campground is the main camping operation in the village — and for visitors who want to wake up close enough to hear the surf without paying for a renovated cottage, it's the answer. The campground sits at The Domain, the village's central green space, set back from the beach by a short walk through the dunes. You're in Piha, but you're not on top of it.

The site offers a mix of options. Powered and non-powered tent sites for visitors with their own setup. Caravan and motorhome bays. A small number of cabins for visitors who'd rather not pitch a tent but still want the campground experience. Shared facilities — kitchen, bathrooms, laundry, communal space — are looked after properly, which makes a real difference on longer stays.

Fiona runs the operation and has done for years. The campground works the way it does because of the management — friendly, organised, the kind of operator who knows the village and points guests toward the right walks, the right surf zones, the right times of day to be on the beach.

The campground is open year-round and the rhythm shifts dramatically with the seasons. Summer is busy — book well ahead for Christmas, New Year, and any school holiday weekend. Winter is quiet and the campground stays open for the visitors who want Piha at its emptiest. There's a particular pleasure to a campground in a coastal village on a grey winter morning, with the wind off the Tasman and almost nobody else around.

Worth knowing about location: you're a short walk from the beach, The Bowler, Coastal Beach Diner, and Surfside at the south end. The Domain itself is the village's open space — there's room for kids to run, room for ball games, room to spread out in a way that more cramped campgrounds don't allow.
